Understanding the National Tennis Rating Program

National Tennis Program Explained

The National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) is a classification system used by the USTA to categorize tennis players based on their skill level, helping to promote fair and competitive play. It uses a scale from 1.0 (beginner) to 7.0 (touring pro), with ratings determined by a player’s general characteristics and performance in USTA adult divisions and sanctioned tournaments.

How it works:

  • Skill-Based Ratings:NTRP ratings are based on a player’s overall skill level, not age.
  • Numerical Scale:The system uses a numerical scale from 1.0 to 7.0, with 1.0 being the beginner level and 7.0 representing tour professionals.
  • Gradual Changes:Ratings change gradually over time as they reflect a player’s consistent skill level.
  • Determined by Play:Ratings are determined by results in USTA Adult divisions, USTA-sanctioned tournaments, and potentially other leagues.
  • Helpful for Finding Opponents:Knowing a player’s NTRP rating can help them find compatible opponents for matches, leagues, and tournaments.

Levels and Descriptions:

Advanced (5.0-7.0): Developing strong strokes, using advanced tactics, and exhibiting high levels of consistency and control.

Beginner (1.0-1.5): Learning basic strokes and developing court awareness.

Intermediate (2.5-4.5): Developing more consistent strokes, starting to use power and spin, and learning basic strategies.

Frequently Asked Questions

3.0 is the lowest level?

Yes. At this level, the players are able to serve and hit forehand backhand but not consistently.

How does the doubles work?

We expect the players to be a combination of the level so 3.5 would add up to 7.0, meaning a 4.0 player and a 3.0 player. In mixed 4.0 would be 8.0 combined so a 4.5 and 3.5 or a 5.0 and 3.0.

For Thailand levels, how does it work?

C in Thailand would be 3.0-3.5. B would be 4.0-4.5. A would be 5.0-5.5

What happens if I am in the wrong level?

We accept you playing in the wrong level for the first time, but we will change your rating for the next tournament. We only do this in a positive manner, if you lose, it’s your discretion to change
